Dolphy

He is known as “The King of Comedy” in the Philippines, and his career spans for more than 50 years in show business. With such a legendary status already putting him on top, he still continues to be one of the most respectable actors in the industry and a role model to many. Dolphy was born as Rodolfo Quizon on July 25, 1928, in Pampanga to a Filipino-Chinese, Melencio Espinosa Quizon, and Salud de la Rosa Vera. He was later raised in Tondo, Manila. He started out as a struggling performer during the Japanese occupation. Then, the late Fernando Poe, Sr., noticed his comedic talent and gave him his first break as a character actor. He went on to take roles in different comedy films together with other famous comic characters, such as Babalu, Pugo, Tugo, Ike Lozada, German Moreno, Panchito, and many more. There is a story that he had once opened for the Beatles during their concert in Rizal Memorial Stadium back in 1966 along with his partner Panchito as the comic duo “Dolphy and Panchito.” Even if their show was in pure Tagalog, Beatles member Paul McCartney has stated that he was amused by the show and found it quite interesting. His most famous role has got to be as John Puruntong in the sitcom John En Marsha, starring alongside the late Nida Blanca, which lasted for 17 years, and ending in 1990. After that role, he went back to ABS-CBN and took on the role of Kevin Kosme, which is a play on the name of Kevin Costner, in the sitcom Home Along da Riles, which was reinvented into Home Along da Airport years later. He now currently lives with his domestic partner, actress and singer Zsa-Zsa Padilla. He has had 18 children with 5 different women. These children include Dolphy Jr., Eric, Jeffrey, Epi, Freddie, Ronnie, Michelle, and Vandolph; most of whom are actors as well. His eldest son, Dolphy Jr., was an actor who was said as a chip off the old block, a true protégé of his father, but he eventually was overcome by his own success and he got into drugs and other vices. He eventually was arrested and incarcerated for arson. He spent many years in jail and was released after a very long time. During his stay, he was converted to born-again Christianity, and he now spends his life doing work for his ministry and spreading the Gospel. He also acts in dramatic roles in multiple occasions. He has once gained international recognition, along with his sons Eric and Jeffrey, for their roles as Walterina Markova in the film “Markova: Comfort Gay,” winning the Prix de la Meilleure Interpretation Award in Brussels, Belgium, which is the equivalent of a Best Actor Award. Nowadays, he stars in the sitcom John En Shirley, a spin-off of the show that made him famous, along with Maricel Soriano. He is the only original character to return to the show. He is still active as an actor while nearing the age of 80 years old with over 5 decades in the business.
